Now when Ezrâ had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים), there assembled unto him out of Yâshârêl a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
2

And Shekanyâhû the son of Yechı̂yêl, one of the sons of Êylâm, answered and said unto Ezrâ, We have trespassed against our ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים), and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Yâshârêl concerning this thing.
3

Now therefore let us make a covenant with our ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים) to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים); and let it be done according to the tôrâh.
4

Arise; for this matter belongs unto you: we also will be with you: be of good courage, and do it.

Then arose Ezrâ, and made the chief kôhên, the Lêwı̂yı̂y, and all Yâshârêl, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they swore.

Then Ezrâ rose up from before the house of ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים), and went into the chamber of Yôchânân the son of Elyâshı̂yb (אֶלְיָשִׁיב): and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.

And they made proclamation throughout Yahûdâh and Yerûshâlaim unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Yerûshâlaim;

And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
9

Then all the men of Yahûdâh and Binyâmı̂yn gathered themselves together unto Yerûshâlaim within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים), trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
10

And Ezrâ the kôhên stood up, and said unto them, You have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Yâshârêl.
11

Now therefore make confession unto YAHUAH (יהוה) ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים) of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
12

Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, as you have said, so must we do.
13

But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
14

Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our ĔLÔHÎYM (אֱלֹהִים) for this matter be turned from us.
15

Only Yahônâthân (יְהוֹנָתָן) the son of Ăśâhêl and Yachzeyâh (יַחְזְיָה) the son of Tiqwâh (תִּקְוָה) were employed about this matter: and Meshûllâm and Shabbethay (שַׁבְּתַי) the Lêwı̂yı̂y helped them.

And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezrâ the kôhên, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
17

And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
18

And among the sons of the kôhên there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Yâshûah the son of Yôtsâdâq, and his brethren; Maăśêyâhû (מַעֲשֵׂיָהוּ), and Eliyezer, and Yârı̂yb, and Gedalyâhû (גְּדַלְיָהו).

And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.
20

And of the sons of Immêr; Chănânı̂y (חֲנָנִי), and Zebadyâhû.
21

And of the sons of Chârim; Maăśêyâhû, and Êlı̂yâhû (אֵלִיָּהוּ), and Shemayâhû, and Yechı̂yêl, and Ûzzı̂yâhû (עֻזִּיָּהוּ).
22

And of the sons of Pashchûr; Elyehôêynay, Maăśêyâhû, Yishmâêl, Nethanêl, Yôzâbâd, and Elâśâh (אֶלְעָשָׂה).
23

Also of the Lêwı̂yı̂y; Yôzâbâd, and Shimı̂y, and Qêlâyâh (קֵלָיָה), the same is Qelı̂yṭâ (קְלִיטָא), Pethachyâh (פְּתַחְיָה), Yahûdâh, and Ĕlı̂yezer.

Of the singers also; Elyâshı̂yb: and of the porters; Shallûm, and Telem, and Ûrı̂y (אוּרִי).
25

Moreover of Yâshârêl: of the sons of Parôsh; Ramyâh (רַמְיָה), and Yizzı̂yâh (יִזִּיָּה), and Malkiyâhû (מַלְכִּיָהוּ), and Mı̂yâmin (מִיָּמִן), and Elâzâr, and Malkiyâhû (מַלְכִּיָהוּ), and Benâyâhû (בְּנָיָהוּ).

And of the sons of Êylâm; Mattanyâhû (מַתַּנְיָהוּ), Zekaryâhû, and Yechı̂yêl, and Abdı̂y (עַבְדִּי), and Yerı̂ymôth (יְרִימוֹת), and Êlı̂yâhû (אֵלִיָּהוּ).

And of the sons of Zattû; Elyehôêynay, Elyâshı̂yb, Mattanyâhû (מַתַּנְיָהוּ), and Yerı̂ymôth, and Zâbâd, and Ăzı̂yzâ (עֲזִיזָא).

Of the sons also of Bêbay; Yehôchânân (יְהוֹחָנָן), Chănanyâhû (חֲנַנְיָהוּ), Zabbay, and Athlay.
29

And of the sons of Bânı̂y; Meshûllâm, Mallûk (מַלּוּךְ), and Ădâyâhû (עֲדָיָהוּ), Yâshûb, and Sheâl, and Yerı̂ymôth (יְרִימוֹת).
30

And of the sons of Pachath Môâb; Adnâ, and Kelâl (כְּלָל), Benâyâhû, Maăśêyâhû, Mattanyâhû (מַתַּנְיָהוּ), Betsalêl (בְּצַלְאֵל), and Binnûy, and Menashsheh.

And of the sons of Chârim; Ĕlı̂yezer, Yishshı̂yâhû (יִשִּׁיָּהוּ), Malkiyâhû (מַלְכִּיָהוּ), Shemayâhû, Shimôn,
32

Binyâmı̂yn, Mallûk, and Shemaryâhû (שְׁמַרְיָהוּ).
33

Of the sons of Châshûm; Mattenay, Mattattâh, Zâbâd, Ĕlı̂ypheleṭ, Yerêmay (יְרֵמַי), Menashsheh, and Shimı̂y.
34

Of the sons of Bânı̂y; Maăday (מַעֲדַי), Amrâm, and Ûêl,
35

Benâyâhû, Bêdeyâh (בֵּדְיָה), Kelûhay (כְּלוּהַי),
36

Wanyâh (וַנְיָה), Merêmôth, Elyâshı̂yb,
37

Mattanyâhû (מַתַּנְיָהו), Mattenay, and Yaăśû (יַעֲשׂוּ),
38

And Bânı̂y, and Binnûy, Shimı̂y,
39

And Shelemyâhû (שֶׁלֶמְיָהוּ), and Nâthân, and Ădâyâhû,
40

Maknadbay (מַכְנַדְבַי), Shâshay, Shâray (שָׁרַי),
41

Ăzarêl (עֲזַרְאֵל), and Shelemyâhû (שֶׁלֶמְיָהוּ), Shemaryâhû (שְׁמַרְיָהוּ),
42

Shallûm, Ămaryâhû, and Yôsêph (יוֹסֵף).
43

Of the sons of Nebô; Yeı̂yêl (יְעִיאֵל), Mattithyâhû (מַתִּתְיָהוּ), Zâbâd, Zebı̂ynâ, Yiddô (יִדּוֹ), and Yôêl (יוֹאֵל), Benâyâhû.
44

All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
